Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure using the freezing technique to remove abnormal tissue outgrowths in the skin. This procedure uses liquid nitrogen for freezing the abnormal tissues in an instant. The liquid nitrogen at a temperature range of 346 and -320°F is sprayed or wiped on the targeted area for few seconds. This results in a blister in the spot which eventually cuts off along with the abnormal tissue growth. This treatment method is used to remove skin lesions from the body surface. Skin lesion on the body can be:

  • Benign
  • Precancerous skin lesions that appear as scaly patches that can eventually turn into cancerous.
  • Superficial skin cancer

Cryosurgery is performed to eradicate cancerous skin lesion if:

  • It is a primary lesion
  • Multiple cancerous skin lesions that have to be destroyed.
  • Bleeding skin lesions.
  • Failed other treatment methods

Cryosurgery procedure

Cryotherapy procedure is performed to save the skin surface around the lesions and to reduce the scarring after removing the skin lesion. There is no need for any preparation for the procedure. The aesthetic surgeon begins the process by administering an anesthetic or by using a numbing agent on the targeted area to reduce any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Later liquid nitrogen is sprayed or wiped on the skin lesion for few seconds. The liquid nitrogen freezes the skin lesion and causes blisters. The blister eventually falls off along with the skin lesion. This method prevents the spread of cancerous tissue to other parts of the body as the skin lesion is completely removed from the body.

After treating the skin lesion with liquid nitrogen, the area becomes red and swells. Drainage of the blister may occur which is normal. The blister falls off in time and leaves no scar on the skin.

Cryosurgery method of removing skin lesion produces best results in light skin and in no hair area of the body. Liquid nitrogen can be applied by a spraying method or by simply wiping the targeted area.

Spraying method can be performed using

  • timed spot freeze
  • the rotary or spiral pattern
  • Paint-brush method.

Although cryosurgery method is used to remove cancerous skin lesion, they can also be applied to remove benign skin lesions such as

  • actinic keratosis
  • solar lentigo
  • seborrheic keratosis
  • viral wart
  • molluscum contagiosum
  • dermatofibroma.
  • Advantages of Cryosurgery
  • Minimum time
  • short preparation time
  • Low risk of infection
  • minimal wound care
  • No scar
  • No pain and stress
  • Non-invasive method
  • no injectable anesthesia,
  • Zero downtime
