Hand Surgery

Impaired hand due to accident, trauma or previous surgery can be recovered by hand surgery. The surgery treats a condition that causes pain and impairs and affects the strength, function, and flexibility of the wrist and fingers. Surgery helps to restore the normal functioning of hands and fingers by rectifying all the abnormalities.

Hand surgery is performed to rectify various conditions and abnormalities in the hands and fingers including:

Carpal tunnel syndrome: this is a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve or the carpal tunnel. The wrist may feel pain, weakness, and numbness in the fingers.

Rheumatoid arthritis: causes inflammation in the joint of the body. If the condition affects the hand, it can collapse fingers, causing pain and impair movement.

Dupuytren's contracture: A condition in which thick, scar tissue bands are formed within the palm and extend into the fingers causing movement restriction.

Hand surgery procedure

The aesthetic surgeon initiates the surgery by administering a dose of local anesthesia to keep the hands and muscles relaxed during the procedure. All the hand and finger injuries caused by trauma are rectified by tendon repair. For the repair, an incision is made to reach the tendon. The damaged tendon is repaired and the connection is restored to re-establish function and movement.

For the rectification of carpal tunnel syndrome, the constricted tissue is accessed by making an incision from the middle of the palm to the wrist. Another method of repair is an endoscopic carpal tunnel release. The method uses an endoscope for the surgery. An endoscope is a thin flexible tube that has a camera attached to its end.

During the procedure, a small incision is made to insert the endoscope and the aesthetic surgeon views and investigate the damage through the images obtained from the camera through the connected monitor. Later few more small incisions are made to insert the surgical tools to rectify the damage and to release the pressure on the carpal tunnel.

Syndactyly is a childbirth defect caused when the fingers are fused together. The surgery for this condition is performed to separate the fingers and to provide a full array of motion and a regular appearance.

After the required corrections, the incision is closed using sutures.
