Post Cancer Restoration

Post cancer restoration includes restoration of various body parts that has been removed as part of the cancer treatment. Cancer is a medical condition caused by the outgrowth of the tissues. This can occur in any part of the body. If the spread of cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage, then the affected area or organ has to be removed to stop the spread of disease to other organs or parts of the body. This can cause lose of balance or asymmetry of the appearance of the body. In women, breast cancer is one of the common medical conditions as result in the loss of one or both breast as part of the cancer treatment. Women who have lost their breast will lose their self esteem and outlook. Post cancer restoration procedures are performed to restore the lost body balance and enhance the aesthetic appearance.

An autologous tissue reconstruction is a tissue flap procedure to rebuild the shape of the breast after surgery. During these procedures, tissues from other parts of your body including the abdominal area, thighs, or buttocks are obtained and transferred to rebuild the breast. Tissue flaps look and behave natural. They do not enlarge or shrink during weight gain or lose. During the tissue flap implantation procedure, the tissue along with nerves supply and blood vessels are obtained from the donor site and implanted into the targeted site and nourished to establish new connection at the site.

Types of tissue flap procedures

The most common types of tissue flap procedures are classified based on the location from which the flaps are obtained:

  • TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis muscle): obtain flap tissue from the abdomen
  • DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator): acquire the flap tissue from the abdomen
  • Latissimus dorsi flap: attain the flap tissue from the upper back
  • GAP (gluteal free flap): obtains the tissue flap from the buttocks
  • TUG (transverse upper gracilis): uses flap tissue from the inner thigh

After the breast is reconstructed, the nipple and areola reconstructions are required. This is performed as a separate surgery and is an outpatient procedure. The procedure is performed after a break of 3- 4 months after the breast reconstruction. Before the surgery, the size, shape, texture, color, and projection and location of the nipple is fixed by the aesthetic surgeon. The tissues required for the reconstruction of nipple and areola is obtained from the newly reconstructed breast or from the inner thighs..
